PIQF Quilts

When I got home from my Sue Benner workshop, I found my two quilts returned from Pacific International Quilt Festival (held in Santa Clara, California, from October 15-18, 2009), along with judges' comments. While I won no prizes -- and didn't expect to -- I was just pleased to have had one traditional and one contemporary art quilt accepted into this excellent venue. As the judges' comments form says, "Congratulations! The quilt you have submitted is the work of your talents and you are the final judge of your own quilt. It has been a pleasure to see your work."

I've previously posted a photo and blurb about Perseverance/Persistence. The one I forgot to photograph before is "Sea Ranch Through the Redwoods" (pictured above). My quilting goals for the year are to use primarily solids and hand dyes and to go more abstract . . . but to allow for flexibility. So in this quilt I allowed myself one batik, I included four representational objects in the quilting (up close, you can find a deer, a seal, a pelican, and mushrooms), and I stylized the redwoods (though they look kind of like ferns) so you can at least tell they are evergreens. The curves and colors speak to me of the meadows, hills, oceans, and expansive open skies of my beloved Sea Ranch.

Judges Robbi Joy Eklow and Lois Smith commented, “Good composition and color. Pleasing piece.” I know the edges are a bit wobbly -- always room for much improvement!
