BROAD BRUSH DYE-PAINTED FABRICS

I have just dye-painted twenty-two pieces of fabric (cottons and silks) and five silk scarves in a Sue Benner workshop called “Broad Brush: Dye-Painting and Printing with Procion Dyes.” Held at Nancy Crow’s Timberframe Barn in Baltimore, Ohio, the five-day class was an awesome experience. The only other dye-painting class I had taken was a five day class with Hollis Chatelain, at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California, about two years ago. Both used fabric prepared with soda ash and Procion MX dyes, but whereas my time in Hollis’ class was spent with a tiny brush painting a portrait and a realistic landscape, the time with Sue was spent feeling like a kindergartner playing and making a mess. Both have their rewards! These are a few samples of my week’s work.
